China Reviewing Impact of US Supreme Court Ruling on Tariffs
Beijing (ANTARA) - China’s Ministry of Commerce said on Monday (23/2) that it had taken note of the US Supreme Court ruling against US government tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), and is conducting a comprehensive assessment of its content and implications.
The US Supreme Court ruled on Friday (20/2) last week that the imposition of tariffs by the US government against its trading partners under IEEPA was illegal.
Responding to media questions, a spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Commerce said that China has long opposed all forms of unilateral tariff increases. The spokesperson also stressed that there are no winners in a trade war and that protectionism leads to a dead end.
Unilateral policies applied by the US, such as the imposition of reciprocal tariffs and fentanyl tariffs, not only violate international economic and trade rules but also contravene US domestic law, and do not benefit any party, the spokesperson added.
“China urges the US to revoke the unilateral tariffs imposed against its trading partners,” the spokesperson said, emphasising that if China and the US cooperate, both will benefit, and when they are in conflict, both will suffer.
Furthermore, the spokesperson stated that China has observed that the US side is preparing to use alternative measures, such as trade investigations, in an effort to maintain the tariffs imposed on its trading partners. “China will closely monitor this and firmly protect its own interests.”
