China Ready to Discuss AI with US at Head-of-State Level
Beijing (ANTARA) - The Chinese government has stated it is ready to discuss artificial intelligence (AI) with the United States at the level of the two countries’ heads of state.
“Head-of-state diplomacy plays an irreplaceable role in providing strategic guidance for China-US relations. We are ready to work with the US to implement the important understandings reached by the two presidents on AI,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian at a press conference in Beijing on Friday.
US President Donald Trump previously said he would discuss the issue of artificial intelligence with Chinese President Xi Jinping during a face-to-face meeting between the two leaders in Washington next September.
“I have always said that America’s goal must be to dominate the future, and that includes being the number one superpower in artificial intelligence,” Trump said at an event in Washington announcing an initiative to protect Americans from rising electricity bills due to the rapid growth of AI data centres.
“We are leading China. We want to maintain that position,” Trump stated. “President Xi is coming on 24 September, and we talked about it when I was in Beijing, and we will discuss it again.”
Currently, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu is also in Washington DC to meet with US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, Senior Director for Asian Affairs at the White House National Security Council Ivan J. Kanapathy, and US Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Elbridge A. Colby.
“The China-US delegations exchanged in-depth views on following up on the important understandings reached by the leaders of China and the US, as well as efforts to build a constructive China-US relationship with strategic stability,” Lin Jian added.
Lin Jian also emphasised that AI is one of the highest priority agendas in the world today.
On Thursday (23/7), White House Spokesperson Karoline Leavitt signalled that the alleged theft of AI technology by China from American companies would likely be one of the main agendas at the summit.
“There are always various topics discussed. I imagine this will be one of the things that is very important to the president and this administration,” Leavitt said during a press conference when asked about the allegations.
The statements were made a day after the United States accused Chinese AI start-up Moonshot AI of stealing technology from Anthropic’s most advanced model, Claude Fable 5.
White House Chief Technology Advisor Michael Kratsios said the US government has information indicating Moonshot AI utilised Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5 model to train its latest AI model, Kimi K3, through a distillation technique.
The accusations emerged amid easing tensions in relations between Washington and Beijing, as both countries prepare for a summit at the White House.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Manila this week to prepare for Xi’s visit.
In mid-May, Trump visited Beijing and agreed with Xi to stabilise bilateral relations despite ongoing differences.
During that visit, Trump also invited Xi Jinping to visit the White House on 24 September 2026.
