China Opposes UK's Nationalisation of British Steel
China firmly opposes and expresses strong dissatisfaction with the British government’s decision to nationalise British Steel, a subsidiary of China’s Jingye Group, a spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Commerce said on Friday. British Steel had been operating at a loss for many years before being acquired by Jingye, which injected significant capital, maintained its operations, and preserved its jobs, the Chinese commerce official said in response to media queries. China urges the UK to comply with relevant international rules, fulfil its obligations under the China-UK investment protection agreement, and treat Chinese-invested companies in the UK fairly and equitably, the spokesperson added. China will closely monitor the development of the situation, support Chinese companies in protecting their rights through legal channels, and take resolute measures to firmly safeguard the interests of Chinese companies, the spokesperson said.
