China Launches First Robot Smartphone, Here's How It Differs from Standard Phones
Innovation in mobile phones continues to develop. In terms of form factor, the foldable smartphone category has become increasingly popular and available in the market. Samsung and Huawei have even introduced triple-fold smartphones as further developments.
Beyond screen innovation, smartphone form factor continues to become increasingly novel. Most recently, Chinese smartphone manufacturer Honor showcased its latest smartphone concept, called the Robot Phone.
This device looks completely different from standard smartphones and features mechanical capabilities based on artificial intelligence (AI) not yet found in other phones.
The launch took place at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on Sunday, 1 March local time.
The Robot Phone is equipped with a camera mounted on a small robotic arm that can extend from the main body of the device. The camera not only moves automatically but can also lock onto and track moving objects or people.
This technology is powered by a mini motor and integrated with Honor’s AI assistant. Users can speak to the device, and the camera responds by nodding to answer “yes” or “no”.
This concept makes the photography and videography experience more dynamic, resembling professional gimbal devices such as DJI’s Osmo line.
Honor stated that the Robot Phone is targeted for commercial launch in China in the second half of this year. The device is expected to be positioned in the premium segment.
This move is regarded as Honor’s effort to break away from the competitive smartphone design market, which tends to be uniform. In a saturated market, extreme innovation such as a robotic camera module is considered strong differentiation.
IDC analyst Francisco Jeronimo called this launch more of a marketing strategy to build Honor’s innovative image outside China.
“There is novelty in it and they need this kind of innovation to demonstrate their capabilities,” he said, quoted from CNBC International on Monday, 2 March 2026.
He added, “This will grab everyone’s attention. Whether that will translate to sales when launched, that will be a major challenge, especially if the price is high or the phone is large.”
Currently, in the Chinese market, Honor holds sixth place with a market share of just above 13%. However, in Europe, its share is still around 3%, so the company is aggressively seeking new appeal to increase brand penetration.
Magic V6
On the same occasion, Honor also introduced its latest premium foldable smartphone, the Magic V6.
The device has a thickness of 8.75 mm when closed, thinner than its predecessor and equivalent to the iPhone 17 Pro Max. The Magic V6 is also equipped with a large-capacity battery and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor.
The Magic V6 will begin sales in China in March, before launching to international markets in the second half of this year. The device’s official price has not been announced by the company.
