China-Laos Railway Sees Peak Summer Passenger Traffic

Since the start of the summer travel peak in 2026, the China-Laos cross-border railway service has recorded impressive passenger flows. According to data from China Railway Kunming Group Co., Ltd., since 1 July, an average of 53.2 high-speed train journeys have served the Kunming-Xishuangbanna route daily. During the same period, the number of passengers on the domestic segment of the China-Laos Railway reached 649,000 people per day, while more than 11,000 cross-border passengers passed through the Mohan border post daily. At the Mohan border post, local authorities have launched various special services to facilitate the customs inspection process, including reservation-based customs clearance for tourist groups, intelligent inspection platforms, and self-service facilities. These facilities have significantly reduced border inspection times. Additionally, foreign currency ATMs, currency exchange services, and mobile phone SIM card sales are available for inbound passengers. ‘This is my first time travelling abroad by train. The multilingual services, convenient customs process, and the very unique train ticket design all provide a new experience for me,’ said Lin Ruoyin, a Chinese tourist heading to Laos for a holiday, as she was about to board the train.
