Jakarta (ANTARA) - China’s Ambassador to ASEAN, Wang Qing, has called for Indonesia and China to work together to uphold the international order and rule of law amid eroding confidence in multilateralism.

“We must strengthen our cooperation to the multilateral level. We can demonstrate together how we uphold the principles and focus of the United Nations (UN) and how we protect international law,” said Ambassador Wang during a meeting and dialogue with media and think tanks in Jakarta on Thursday.

He stated that Indonesia and China can initiate joint efforts to achieve the global ideals envisioned by the UN, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) targeted for completion by 2030.

Indonesia and China should also collaborate to advance the joint development outlined by the UN. “So that we can do it together,” said Wang.

Furthermore, Ambassador Wang highlighted Indonesia’s important position at the regional and global levels. Indonesia, he said, is not only a member of ASEAN but also part of the G20 and BRICS.

Indonesia is also an important country in the Global South, especially with its role as the initiator of the 1955 Asian-African Conference in Bandung, which gave birth to the Bandung Ten Principles, he added.

“Indonesia should have a greater role both at the international and regional levels,” said Ambassador Wang.

Meanwhile, China believes in the relevance of the “Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence” as a foundation for inter-state relations today, which include equality for all countries and respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states.

“I think this is very important for the international order,” said the Chinese Ambassador to ASEAN.

The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) continues to emphasise Jakarta’s commitment to strengthening multilateral cooperation amid the changing dynamics and global landscape, including by supporting UN reforms.

“For Indonesia, an effective, inclusive, and relevant UN that aligns with its goals remains very important,” said Director General of Multilateral Cooperation at Kemlu, Tri Tharyat, during a seminar with the UN in Jakarta on Wednesday (11/3).
