China imposes robotaxi service pause following mass breakdown incident
The Chinese government has imposed a temporary pause on robotaxi and autonomous vehicle services following a mass breakdown incident involving 100 autonomous vehicles in Wuhan on 31 March 2026. One hundred Apollo Go robotaxi vehicles suddenly ceased operations, causing traffic chaos on several roads in Wuhan. As a result, the Chinese government has imposed a pause preventing robotaxi companies from adding new autonomous vehicles to passenger transport services until the end of June 2026. The policy was established by the Ministers of Industry and Information Technology, Public Security, and Transport. However, industry players have stated the policy will not alter this year’s autonomous vehicle expansion targets. Conversely, several industry stakeholders have urged regulators to adopt a more measured approach rather than blanket rules applying to all companies. WeRide CEO Han Xu suggested the government incentivise companies with strong safety records while penalising those with poor safety records. According to Han, this approach mirrors the safety oversight system in the aviation industry, where evaluations are based on individual operators’ performance.
