Beijing (ANTARA) - China’s Ministry of Commerce announced on Friday that it will impose an additional tariff of 55 per cent on beef imports from Australia, effective Saturday, on top of existing tariffs. China has implemented safeguard measures on beef imports since 1 January 2026. The measures are applied in the form of country-specific quotas, with additional tariffs levied on import volumes exceeding the established quota. Under these provisions, starting from the third day after a country’s beef import volume reaches its designated annual quota, beef imports from that country will be subject to an additional tariff of 55 per cent. Australian beef imports under the safeguard measures reached 100 per cent of the allocated quota on 18 June, according to the ministry. China’s Ministry of Commerce and the General Administration of Customs (GAC) will issue alerts when a country’s beef import quota has reached 50 per cent and 80 per cent. The two agencies will also publish a notice regarding the upcoming application of the additional tariff when the quota utilisation rate reaches 100 per cent.
