A suspected massive data leak has hit China after a hacker claimed to have breached the country’s supercomputer and stolen secret defence documents. If true, this could reveal sensitive information related to Beijing’s military capabilities and strategic technology projects. CNN reports that the stolen dataset exceeds 10 petabytes and is believed to originate from the National Supercomputing Center in Tianjin. This facility is a vital computing hub serving over 6,000 clients, including advanced scientific research institutions and Chinese defence bodies. Cybersecurity experts say the hacker likely accessed the system with relative ease and siphoned data for months without detection. Samples of the leak were uploaded by an account named FlamingChina via an anonymous Telegram channel on 6 February. The group claims the data covers aerospace research, military studies, bioinformatics, and nuclear fusion simulations. Moreover, the leaked information is said to relate to key Chinese organisations such as the Aviation Industry Corporation of China, Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, and the National University of Defense Technology. The alleged leaked data samples include files marked “secret”, technical schematics, animation simulations, and weapon renders such as bombs and missiles. The dataset is even being offered for sale, with previews priced at thousands of dollars and full access reaching hundreds of thousands of dollars, payable in cryptocurrency. Although the data’s origin has not been independently verified, several experts deem the leak appears authentic upon initial examination.
