China highlights AI-based hoaxes related to vehicle accidents

Beijing (ANTARA) - Chinese police on Tuesday (18/8) highlighted misinformation and fabricated claims related to artificial intelligence (AI) concerning vehicle accidents as part of a crackdown on online rumours to protect the legitimate rights and interests of businesses.

AI featured in several of the 14 cases released by the cybersecurity division of China’s Ministry of Public Security, either as a tool for fabricating content or as the subject of false claims.

In one case in Shangqiu, Henan Province, central China, police said a man surnamed Xue used AI tools to create a fake video depicting a car accident and uploaded it to Douyin, a popular video-sharing platform.

In another case, police in Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province, eastern China, said a man spread false claims that an official video released by a company showing drifting manoeuvres was made using AI, and that an autonomous vehicle had struck a sanitation worker.

In a third case, police in Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province, eastern China, said a man fabricated claims suggesting that an official video from a company showing drifting manoeuvres had been created using AI, and that an autonomous vehicle had struck a sanitation worker.

Police said these actions had damaged the reputations of the companies concerned and their products, and raised concerns among their users.

In most of the cases, the individuals involved were given administrative sanctions, while one person faced criminal charges.
