China Flood Disaster: Nine Dead as Chongqing Submerged in Water and Mud

Heavy rain on Saturday night triggered flash floods and landslides in Yongchuan District, with numerous residential areas and villages suffering severe damage from the extreme weather. Government media previously reported three fatalities on Sunday (24 May 2026), but the death toll continues to rise as search and rescue operations are ongoing in affected areas. Xinhua state news agency stated over 2,000 residents have been evacuated from high-risk zones, with rescue teams deployed to locate missing persons and assist affected communities. The Chongqing disaster occurred amid heavy rainfall affecting parts of central and southwestern China in recent days. Last week, dozens died in floods and landslides caused by extreme weather in various regions of the country.
