BEIJING (AFP): China is stepping up a major drive against corruption in the police and the judicial department, sources said on Wednesday.
A Hong Kong newspaper reported on Wednesday that the police chief of the southern city of Guangzhou had been forcibly escorted to Beijing to help in the investigation of corruption charges against a public security minister.
Sources in Beijing confirmed that deputy public security minister Li Jizhou was formally arrested for corruption in mid- December. Li had been responsible for a nationwide crackdown on smuggling.
A top official in the customs administration was arrested around the same time, they said, adding both would probably be executed if found guilty.
