China expresses serious concern over US trade restrictions
Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng expressed serious concern over the latest US economic and trade restrictions against China during a video conference with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. According to the Chinese news agency Xinhua, the two sides engaged in an open, in-depth, and constructive exchange of views regarding the implementation of agreements reached during the leaders’ meeting in Beijing.
The discussions also covered maintaining the stability of economic and trade relations, expanding practical cooperation, and effectively addressing each party’s concerns in the next phase. This follows the recent announcement by the US Trade Representative regarding a 12.5 per cent tariff on imports from China.
Officials agreed to further utilise China-US economic and trade consultation mechanisms to strengthen communication, build mutual trust, eliminate doubts, and expand cooperation. Both parties also committed to promoting stable and positive development in bilateral economic and trade relations and contributing to the development of a constructive relationship characterised by strategic stability.
These talks took place ahead of the planned visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping to the US in late September. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently stated that the high-level meeting remains on schedule, despite allegations from President Donald Trump regarding Chinese interference in US elections.
Under the agreement reached following the meeting between Trump and Xi in May, Beijing agreed to address Washington’s concerns regarding supply shortages in the supply chains of rare earth elements and other critical minerals. The agreement also requires China to address restrictions on the sale of equipment and processing technology used in the production of these materials. Furthermore, Beijing has committed to purchasing at least $17 billion worth of US agricultural products annually until 2028, in addition to previous commitments.
