China Confident Indonesia Will Protect Business and Investor Interests
China has spoken openly about its trade and economic relationship with Indonesia. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said trade and investment cooperation between China and Indonesia is highly beneficial and profitable for both sides.
At a regular press conference, Lin Jian responded to a question about a meeting between 28 Chinese companies and Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto the previous week. The meeting was said to help allay concerns that Indonesia was becoming less friendly towards investors from the Bamboo Curtain country, particularly following recent government statements accusing certain foreign investors of exploiting or plundering Indonesia’s natural resources.
In a written statement on the Chinese Foreign Ministry’s official website, quoted on Thursday (29 July 2026), Lin Jian said the accusation that foreign investors were plundering Indonesia’s natural resources was not directed at investors from his country.
“We have responded to the statement you mentioned, which accused certain foreign investors of exploiting or ‘plundering’ Indonesia’s natural resources. That statement was not directed at China,” Lin Jian said in his statement.
According to him, under the strategic guidance of the leaders of both countries, economic ties have grown ever closer and mutually beneficial. China and Indonesia, Lin Jian noted, are two major developing countries in the world.
The two countries are friendly neighbours and important cooperation partners for each other’s development, with promising prospects for cooperation. The Indonesian side, he said, has repeatedly expressed its willingness to deepen cooperation.
“The Indonesian side has on several occasions expressed its willingness to deepen industrial and supply chain cooperation with China and welcomes Chinese companies to invest in the country,” Lin Jian said.
Finally, Lin Jian also expressed his belief that the Indonesian government will continue to protect the interests of Chinese investors and businesspeople operating in Indonesia.
“We believe that Indonesia will continue to protect the lawful rights and interests of Chinese companies and foster an environment conducive to their investment and operations there,” Lin Jian said.
Previously, a Chinese business delegation visited Airlangga’s office on Thursday last week. The businesspeople were accompanied by representatives of the Fujian Provincial Government and discussed at length the Two Countries Twin Parks (TCTP) framework.
On that occasion, Airlangga held discussions with a number of Chinese business players. From the Indonesian side, business players from various sectors were also present, including the textile, footwear, furniture, education, plastic packaging, industrial estates, electronics and renewable energy industries.
Airlangga also said Indonesia is ready to work with China as a global partner in trade, investment and other service sectors. He invited Chinese businesspeople not to hesitate to continue their investment commitments in Indonesia.
“We are open to working with global partners, including China, whether in trade, investment, services or education. And I invite Chinese businesses to continue investing in Indonesia, particularly in sectors with high added value,” Airlangga said.
