China Condemns US Ban on Iranian Airlines: Illegal Unilateral Sanctions!
China has reacted strongly to the United States’ move to ban Iranian airlines from operating worldwide, effective from 23 September. Beijing authorities have openly opposed Washington’s action, labelling it as “illegal unilateral sanctions.”
China, which serves as a major economic partner and diplomatic supporter of Iran, condemned the US move, stating it lacks a basis in international law, as reported by AFP on Tuesday (22/9/2026).
“China consistently opposes illegal unilateral sanctions that lack a basis in international law or authorisation from the UN Security Council,” stated Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun during a press conference in Beijing.
China’s condemnation follows statements from US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who announced that “all Iranian airlines will have their operations halted worldwide” starting 23 September.
Bessent warned that Tehran’s airlines would face significant difficulties operating globally due to the American sanctions. There has been no immediate response from Iranian authorities regarding Bessent’s remarks.
The move was announced as the administration of US President Donald Trump demonstrates a determination to increase economic pressure on Iran amidst the protracted conflict.
In his statement, Bessent warned that international aviation hubs serving Iranian aircraft would face total exclusion from the American banking system. He further cautioned that foreign operators could not refuel Iranian planes, provide landing facilities, or sell tickets to Tehran without risking their access to US dollar clearing services.
Beijing’s criticism comes just before the scheduled summit between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington DC this Thursday (24/9). The issue regarding Iran is expected to be one of the key topics of discussion between the two leaders.
