China Commits to Maintaining Peace on the Korean Peninsula

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has stated Beijing’s commitment to playing a constructive role in maintaining peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula. The statement was made during a meeting with South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun in Seoul on Wednesday.

South Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed that the commitment came after Cho requested China’s support to encourage North Korea to return to the negotiating table. The meeting was part of Wang Yi’s series of visits before meeting South Korean President Lee Jae Myung on Thursday.

During the discussion, Cho outlined a peace blueprint previously presented by President Lee Jae Myung. The proposal calls for negotiations between directly concerned parties to formally end the Korean War (1950-1953) and transform the armistice status into a permanent peace order.

South Korea believes that such negotiations could serve as an effective path to halt North Korea’s nuclear weapons development. In response, Wang Yi expressed Beijing’s hope that the two Koreas could gradually take steps towards peaceful coexistence.

Meanwhile, regional dynamics were also influenced by US President Donald Trump’s statement on Wednesday. Trump expressed his hope to hold a direct meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un before the end of the year.

As a de-escalation measure, Trump ordered a reduction in the duration of annual joint military exercises between the US and South Korea. He considered the exercises too expensive and argued they sent an inappropriate and hostile signal to Pyongyang.

However, the scaling back of military exercises was met with a cold response from North Korea. Pyongyang stated that the policy would not change its view of the US and South Korea as hostile parties.
