Foreign Minister of China Wang Yi has called for an immediate end to hostilities in the Middle East. He made this statement during a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who was visiting Beijing. Wang also urged Iran and the United States to reopen the Strait of Hormuz “as soon as possible”. The meeting between Wang and Araghchi, as reported by AFP on Wednesday (6/5/2026), took place in China’s capital on Wednesday (6/5) local time. During the meeting, Wang also requested that the stalled peace negotiations between Tehran and Washington be resumed. The conflict between the US and Israel against Iran, which began on 28 February, was suspended after a two-week ceasefire was announced on 7 April, which was later extended indefinitely by US President Donald Trump. “China believes that a comprehensive cessation of fighting must be achieved without delay, that resuming hostilities is even more unacceptable, and that continuing negotiations remains essential,” Wang said in a statement released by China’s Foreign Ministry after talks with Araghchi. According to China’s Foreign Ministry, Wang also stated that “China hopes that the relevant parties will respond as soon as possible to the urgent calls from the international community” to resume normal and safe maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. Regarding the nuclear issue, Wang said, “China welcomes Iran’s commitment not to develop nuclear weapons, while considering that Iran has the legitimate right to peaceful use of nuclear energy,” during the meeting with Araghchi. China is directly affected by the blockade enveloping the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway for global oil and gas supplies. According to maritime analysis firm Kpler, more than half of China’s seaborne crude oil imports come from the Middle East and mostly transit through the Strait of Hormuz. Beijing has quietly been involved in efforts to resolve the crisis, and its diplomacy is considered to have played an important role in the fragile ceasefire agreed upon by Tehran and Washington previously. “China will work harder to ease tensions and end the fighting, continue to support the launch of peace talks, and play a greater role in restoring peace and stability in the Middle East,” Wang said.
