China calls for broad consensus-based global AI governance framework

Chinese Vice President Han Zheng said on Friday that China will use the upcoming World AI Conference and High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance as opportunities to strengthen exchanges and cooperation with all parties to build a global AI governance system based on broad consensus. Han made the remarks while addressing the opening ceremony of the 14th World Peace Forum in Beijing, where he also called for enhanced governance in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence.

China has proposed a Global AI Governance Initiative that champions a people-centred approach and the development of AI for the good of humanity, Han said. He noted that the world is undergoing accelerated transformation unseen in a century, marked by rising instability, frequent geopolitical conflicts, and increasingly prominent governance deficits.

Han added that Chinese President Xi Jinping has put forward the Global Governance Initiative. He stated that China is willing to work with all countries to safeguard the post-war international order and uphold international fairness and justice. As the host of the 33rd APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting, China will collaborate with all partners to build an Asia-Pacific community, Han said, adding that China will continue to expand high-standard opening-up and work with all nations to promote economic globalisation that is universally beneficial and inclusive.

Approximately 400 people, including former senior foreign policy officials, diplomatic envoys to China, and academics from home and abroad, attended the event in the Chinese capital.
