China advances spacesuit development for 2030 moon landing

Tianjin (ANTARA) - The China Astronautics Science and Training Research Centre (ACC) has stated that it is continuing to advance the development of spacesuits, which is currently progressing well, in order to realise the mission of a crewed lunar landing in 2030.

During an aerospace medical engineering conference in Tianjin, China, on Saturday (19/9), ACC expert Zhang Wanxin reported that the development of the spacesuit named ‘Wangyu’—meaning ‘gazing into the universe’—is proceeding smoothly, with several key technologies already integrated.

Since its development began in 2020, the Wangyu project has focused on meeting the high demands of operating on the complex lunar surface and facing extreme environmental challenges. Zhang stated that the Wangyu suit is designed to be lightweight, compact, efficient, and safe.

In addition to spacesuit development, China is also promoting research into astronaut health. This includes the completion of the ‘Dixing-3’ bed-rest experiments to address physiological challenges encountered during long-term spaceflight and crewed lunar landing missions.

According to another ACC expert, Qu Lina, the experiments began in May this year. Volunteers were divided into several groups and spent either 15 or 30 days on bed rest.

During the experiment, participants were required to perform all daily activities while lying in bed, such as eating, cleaning themselves, sleeping, and using the toilet. The results indicated that the experiment effectively protects human bones, muscles, and the cardiovascular system, providing technical support for long-term space habitation and crewed lunar landings.
