Chillies, Eggs, and Gold Experience Deflation Amid Sky-High Airfare Prices
Chillies, Eggs & Gold Experience Deflation Amid Sky-High Airfare Prices Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded a 0.88% deflation in volatile price components, with a contribution of 0.15%, in April 2026. This component experienced deflation amid the inflation occurring in the consumer price index (CPI) in April 2026. Ateng Hartono, Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics at BPS, stated that the dominant commodities contributing to the deflation were broiler chicken meat, bird’s eye chillies, broiler chicken eggs, and red chillies. "In addition to those groups, the personal equipment and other services group also dampened April’s inflation. The deflation in this group is the deepest since 2020. The deflation contribution comes from gold and jewellery," said Ateng, during the BPS press conference on Monday (4/5/2026). In April 2026, BPS noted that gold jewellery experienced a 3.76% deflation with a 0.09% contribution. This contribution is deeper compared to March 2026. "Previously, gold had experienced inflation for 30 consecutive months since September 2023," said Ateng.
