Chilli and Airfares Record Highest Inflation in Bali for May 2026
Chilli and air transport became the commodities experiencing the highest inflation in Bali during May 2026. The Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) for Bali Province recorded a monthly inflation rate of 0.42 per cent compared to April 2026.
Red chilli recorded the highest inflation at 11.76 per cent with a contribution of 0.03 per cent, followed by air transport with inflation of 8.61 per cent and a contribution of 0.03 per cent, and bird’s eye chilli with inflation of 7.63 per cent and a contribution of 0.04 per cent. Other commodities contributing to inflation included household fuel at 2.07 per cent, cooking oil at 2.14 per cent, and rice at 0.91 per cent.
“This reflects that basic household needs are the primary factor forming inflation in May 2026,” stated the Head of BPS Bali Province, Agus Gede Hendrayana Hermawan, on Tuesday (2/6/2026).
Regionally, the highest monthly inflation occurred in Tabanan Regency at 0.54 per cent, followed by Denpasar City at 0.50 per cent, Singaraja at 0.37 per cent, and Badung Regency at 0.25 per cent.
Agus explained that the price increases for several commodities were influenced by various factors. According to data from the National Food Agency, the rise in bird’s eye chilli and red chilli prices is linked to high rainfall, which caused a decrease in production and an increase in pest attacks on crops.
Furthermore, the price adjustments for non-subsidised LPG implemented by the government since April 2026 continued to impact inflation in May 2026. In the transport sector, rising airfare rates also drove inflation, in line with government policy through the Decree of the Minister of Transportation Number KM 1041 of 2026. The Head of BPS added that government policy led to higher airfares due to the Ministry of Transportation imposing additional fees for economy class passengers on scheduled domestic commercial air transport.
