Chileans plan fish plant

JAKARTA (JP): Chilean investors plan to build a large fish powder plant in North Sumatra, Chile's ambassador to Indonesia, Hernan Tassara said yesterday.

"The result of our recent study has shown that North Sumatra has a very good potential for establishing a fish powder plant, given the abundant fish resources in the province," Tassara told Antara news agency in Medan.

He said that the fish powder to be produced by the plant would be marketed both at home and overseas, especially Asia. Fish powder is a raw material for feedmeal.

The head of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry in the province, Yopie S. Batubara, said that with the planned fish powder plant, Indonesian feedmillers could expect to get cheaper raw materials.

Indonesia is the biggest importer of Chilean fish powder. (gis)
