Chile–ASEAN Business Summit 2026: Indonesia Named Top Priority as Strategic Partner
The Chilean government, via its trade promotion agency ProChile, has officially designated Indonesia as the most crucial strategic partner in the Southeast Asian region. This move was emphasised during the Chile–ASEAN Business Summit 2026 held in Bangkok, Thailand, coinciding with the prestigious THAIFEX-Anuga Asia food exhibition.
The selection of Indonesia is driven by its significant economic potential, with a population approaching 300 million and a rapidly growing middle class, positioning the nation as a dominant regional economic power. Patricio Parraguez, ProChile’s Trade Commissioner for Indonesia, stated that Chile’s vision for Indonesia has shifted from viewing it merely as a consumer market to recognising it as the primary gateway to the broader ASEAN market. He noted that Indonesia’s regional influence presents the most significant long-term investment and trade opportunity for Chile.
“Success in the Indonesian market cannot be achieved instantly. We have learned that building trust, cultural adaptation, and local partnerships are far more important than mere product transactions,” said Parraguez.
Expansion of Premium Food and Agribusiness Sectors
During the summit, it was revealed that the food sector remains a central pillar of cooperation between the two nations. Following recent phytosanitary agreements, premium Chilean products such as lemons and walnuts have gained wider market access in Indonesia. Chile, which recorded a record agro-food export value of USD 24.7 billion in 2025, is targeting Indonesian consumers who are increasingly selective regarding product quality. Key commodities offered by Chile include salmon, shellfish, cherries, and premium wines, all backed by internationally recognised food safety and sustainability standards.
Beyond traditional commodities, the partnership is expanding into innovation and knowledge-based technology sectors. Key areas for future collaboration include:
Aquaculture Technology: As the world’s largest salmon producer, Chile offers expertise in fish health and product traceability systems to support the Indonesian fishing industry.
Mining and EV Sectors: Given Indonesia’s position as a key global nickel player, Chile plans to share expertise in efficient mining technologies and environmental solutions to support the electric vehicle supply chain.
Energy Transition: Significant opportunities exist for cooperation in renewable energy and the development of green hydrogen.
The Chile–ASEAN Business Summit 2026 in Bangkok involved 28 major companies and three primary Chilean industry associations, including Fruits from Chile, Faenacar, and ChileNuts. With an extensive network of 51 trade offices worldwide, ProChile is committed to bridging the gap between Chilean exporters and business partners in Indonesia to foster long-term economic prosperity for both parties.
