Children's Joy Watching TV Together at Nagekeo NTT Evacuation Post
Dozens of children affected by the Flores earthquake enthusiastically watched television at the Berdikari Danga Field evacuation post in Nagekeo Regency, East Nusa Tenggara. Although sitting on the bare ground, they appeared happy watching cartoons together in front of the screen.
“Very happy, only tonight is there a TV that we can watch,” said Elo, one of the children at the evacuation post, on Tuesday (25/8/2026).
Elo and his friends had been waiting since 6.30 pm local time to watch TV. They appeared engrossed in the broadcast. For Elo, watching TV serves as entertainment at the evacuation site.
“So that we are not afraid of earthquakes again,” said the junior high school student from Tonggurambang Village, Aesesa District.
Elo hoped that chairs or tarpaulins would be provided so they could be more comfortable while watching TV. “We are just sitting on the ground,” he added.
Another child, Yohana Fransiska Wudha (10), said she had been displaced for more than a week with her grandfather and grandmother. Yohana said she was happy to be able to watch TV with her friends at the evacuation site.
“Earlier a friend told us that the police had provided a TV, so we came,” said the fifth-grade student from SDI Marapokot.
Yohana said her parents are currently away working as migrants. She has lived with her grandfather and grandmother since she was four years old. Yohana and her grandparents survived when the earthquake struck Nagekeo on Saturday (15/8).
“We are all safe, no injuries, but I still feel afraid. My father and mother are also worried, but I told them we are fine,” Yohana explained.
The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) released updated data on fatalities from the magnitude 7.7 earthquake in NTT. BNPB recorded that the death toll had risen to 103 people as of Tuesday (25/8).
“Today we recorded an additional three deaths, bringing the total to 103 for today,” said BNPB Acting Head of Disaster Data, Information and Communication Centre, Berton Suar Pelita Panjaitan, in a press conference broadcast on BNPB’s YouTube channel on Tuesday.
In addition, more than 185,000 people remain displaced due to the earthquake. Berton said aftershocks are still being felt in NTT.
“As of today we have recorded 185,131 displaced people, both independent evacuees and those in centralised shelters, with 4,804 new evacuees recorded today,” Berton added.
Meanwhile, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded 7,029 aftershocks since the magnitude 7.7 earthquake occurred. The aftershocks often cause panic among the public.
