Children affected by Central Aceh disaster receive psychological support
Central Aceh (ANTARA) — Children affected by the disaster in Central Aceh have received psychological support through a programme by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology (Kemdiktisaintek) in partnership with Teuku Umar University.
The programme is focused in part on providing psychological counselling to affected children in Toweren village, Lut Tawar subdistrict, Central Aceh regency.
"We have been carrying out trauma healing for the children, organising games and various activities. They are undertaking a community service process which we hope will help these children recover," said Teuku Umar University lecturer Irsadi Aristora to ANTARA on Wednesday.
Irsadi explained that the disaster school programme has been running for approximately three months to provide trauma healing for affected children.
Rahmat Hayatun Nupus, head of the Disaster Response Student Activity Unit programme at Teuku Umar University, said the condition of the affected children has already improved.
"It has always been our passion to help communities and children affected by disasters. Besides here, we have actually visited several other areas to provide treatment to children who have experienced the impact of disasters," said Hayatun, a law student at Teuku Umar University.
In Toweren village, a total of 90 children and toddlers were affected by the Sumatran floods that occurred between 25 and 30 November last year.
The majority of these disaster-affected children have since returned to their own homes after approximately three months of sheltering at emergency posts.
