Child Suffers Hypothermia After Being Taken Up Mount Ungaran, KPAI Calls for Age Restrictions
The Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) has spotlighted the incident involving a 1.5-year-old toddler who suffered hypothermia after being taken hiking on Mount Ungaran by her parents. KPAI views this event as a collective lesson for all parents.
“KPAI sees the incident of the toddler taken hiking on Mount Ungaran until suffering hypothermia as an event that needs to serve as a shared lesson,” said KPAI Commissioner in charge of the Family Environment and Alternative Care cluster, Ai Rahmayanti, to reporters on Tuesday (14/4/2026).
Ai explained that a child aged 1.5 years is still considered physically vulnerable. Hiking activities in cold temperatures are not a safe space for toddlers.
“At 1.5 years old, a child is still very vulnerable physically and does not yet have the ability to adapt to extreme conditions such as cold mountain temperatures. Therefore, activities like hiking are not a safe space for toddlers,” she stated.
Ai reminded parents to prioritise child safety in all activities. Children should not be taken on high-risk activities such as mountain climbing.
“We understand that parents have good intentions, but in child-rearing, every decision must consider the best interests of the child, especially in terms of safety,” she said.
“What we need to underline is that children are not for high-risk activities. Child safety and protection must always be the top priority in every parental decision,” she continued.
Furthermore, Ai encouraged the implementation of age limit rules for hikers. She also pushed for education for parents regarding safe activity limits for children.
“We encourage education for the public on safe activity limits for children, as well as the role of hiking managers in setting child safety standards (child safeguarding), including age restrictions. This incident serves as a reminder to us all that child protection starts from small decisions in daily child-rearing,” she added.
Toddler Suffers Hypothermia After Being Taken Up the Mountain
Previously, a video went viral on social media of a 1.5-year-old toddler suffering hypothermia when taken by her parents to hike Mount Ungaran in Semarang Regency. The toddler immediately received treatment from the SAR team.
The viral video was uploaded, among others, by the Instagram account @kabarungaran. In its caption, the account stated that the toddler suffered hypothermia while at Bondolan Peak.
In the video, the toddler can be seen crying loudly. Officers then immediately wrapped the toddler with an emergency blanket. After that, officers appeared to try to calm the toddler. The SAR team then carried the toddler down from the mountain.
The Acting Head of the Central Java Provincial Disaster Management Agency (BPBD Jateng), Bergas Catursasi Penanggungan, confirmed the incident. He revealed that the toddler has now returned home in a safe condition.
“The toddler’s position has descended from Perantunan Basecamp and has been taken home by her parents in a safe condition. The 1.5-year-old female toddler,” said Bergas, quoted from detikJateng, on Monday (13/4).
Bergas explained that the incident occurred on Saturday (11/4). The 1.5-year-old toddler with initials L hiked Mount Ungaran with her father and mother until reaching Bondolan Peak in the afternoon.
“This incident occurred when a family—father, mother, and child—were hiking and arrived at the peak around 14:00 WIB. However, suddenly worsening weather accompanied by heavy rain caused the toddler’s body temperature to drop drastically, leading to hypothermia symptoms,” said Bergas.
