Child Protection Commission Demands Safe Schools After Weapons Discovery in South Jakarta

The Indonesian National Commission for Child Protection (Komnas Anak) DKI Jakarta has raised concerns over the discovery of hundreds of weapons, narcotics, and a pornographic CD at a private school in Pondok Pinang, South Jakarta. Komnas Anak DKI Jakarta Chairperson Cornelia Agatha stressed that schools must remain safe environments for children. “Schools should be safe places. We are continuously promoting child-friendly schools. Finding such items in a place that should be completely safe for children is deeply inappropriate,” she told reporters at the Komnas Anak office in East Jakarta on Sunday (9/8/2026).

Cornelia urged the police to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident. She also highlighted the potential psychological impact on students, questioning whether they could still feel secure and study calmly after the discovery. Komnas Anak Deputy Chairperson Lia Latifah added that schools must not be misused by irresponsible parties, emphasizing that educational institutions should remain sanctuaries for children.

The controversy began after police reported finding 996 weapons on 10-11 July 2026 and again on the evening of 5 August. The Metro Jaya Police Public Relations Head clarified that 995 of the weapons were airsoft guns, while one was a Franchi SPA, SPAS-15 calibre 12 GA firearm belonging to a man identified as DS, a director at PT Lokta Karya Perbakin. The shooting club’s president director, Alhadid Endar Putra, claimed the airsoft guns were legally owned and properly licensed, intended for a target shooting extracurricular activity planned in collaboration with the school since 2020.

However, the school foundation’s legal representative, Alvon Kurnia Palma, challenged this claim, demanding proof that the extracurricular activity was officially approved. He noted that the foundation’s patron, Mr. Suryo, who allegedly agreed to the collaboration, was 104 years old at the time and may have faced significant limitations in understanding and approving such a proposal.
