Child killed in Gorontalo flood

GORONTALO, Gorontalo: Flooding triggered by heavy rain has
claimed the life of a child and inundated several residential
areas and government offices in Marisa subdistrict, Boalemo
regency.

Harun Daui, local public relations head, said here on
Wednesday that the body of 6-year-old Akin Abjul was found one
day after he was drowned in the estuary of the Taludung river.

Harun said floodwater in the village of Buntilia Utara was
waist high, making roads impassable.

The local administration has dispatched rescue teams to
evacuate affected villagers and distribute food, fresh water and
medical assistance to the victims, who are currently housed in
makeshift shelters.

Gorontalo Mayor Medi Botutihe, who visited the flood-stricken
areas, warned local residents living along the Bolango and Bone
rivers to be on the alert for possible dangers resulting from
further heavy rain. --Antara
