Jakarta (ANTARA) - Child advocate Nahar supports the government’s firm efforts to summon Meta and Google as a consequence of their non-compliance with the provisions of Government Regulation No. 17 of 2025 on Child Protection in the Governance of Electronic System Providers (PP Tunas). “A good step that needs to be supported, and it should be strengthened by increasing monitoring and prevention efforts against the falsification of child-owned accounts,” said Nahar when contacted in Jakarta on Thursday. His side appreciates Indonesia’s firm action, which has been followed by the Australian government that is now investigating five social media platforms for not complying with the ban on social media for children under 16 years old. Both technology giants failed to meet the applicable provisions after PP Tunas became effective on 28 March 2026. Meta is the parent company of the digital platforms Threads, Facebook, and Instagram. Meanwhile, Google is the parent company of the YouTube platform. PP Tunas has been in effect since 28 March 2026. Digital platforms are not allowed to provide or accept requests to create social media accounts from children aged under 16 years. Digital platforms must also block or deactivate high-risk digital accounts owned by children aged under 16 years.
