Chicken Thief in Bali Beaten to Death by Mob; Human Rights Ministry Condemns, Urges Legal Process

The Ministry of Human Rights (KemenHAM) has condemned the mob attack that resulted in the death of a suspected chicken thief, identified by the initials KD, in Banjar Dinas Juwuk Legi, Batunya Village, Baturiti District, Tabanan, Bali. The ministry assessed that vigilante action can cause profound trauma for the family, particularly the victim’s children.

“We express our condolences over this incident,” said the Coordinator of the KemenHAM Working Area for Bali, Anak Agung Gede Ngurah Dalem, as reported by detikBali on Sunday (26/7/2026).

Dalem stated that every citizen is entitled to legal protection. Therefore, any form of vigilante justice cannot be justified. A person suspected of committing a criminal offence must be handed over to law enforcement officials in accordance with the regulations.

Dalem urged that the children and family of KD receive assistance and protection, both psychologically and in terms of fulfilling their rights. They are expected to receive optimal attention and protection from the state.

“On the other hand, we also encourage the legal process to proceed professionally, transparently, and accountably, so as to provide legal certainty and a sense of justice for all parties,” said Dalem.

Dalem added that the KemenHAM Working Area for Bali will immediately monitor the field and coordinate with stakeholders to ensure the case handling process adheres to human rights principles. This action is taken as an effort to promote law enforcement that is accountable, transparent, and respects the rights of all parties involved.
