Chicken restaurant burns down

JAKARTA: A fried chicken restaurant, Ny. Suharti, on Jl. Wahid Hasyim, Central Jakarta, burned down on Wednesday.

A fireman was hurt when he was hit by a falling roof tile.

The restaurant, which is part of a franchise, was about to open at around 8:50 a.m. when the fire started.

Kemayoran Fire Department officer Warno suspected that a short circuit caused the fire, saying that "the fire wouldn't have spread that fast if it was sparked by an exploding stove."

He added that the fire started in the roof, where electricity cables were installed.

The owner, Nani Suwarni, said she had yet to calculate the losses incurred.

When the fire was finally extinguished at about 11 a.m., Nani and her workers transported the restaurant's safe and other things that had survived the fire to another restaurant in Puri Indah, West Jakarta. -- JP
