Chicken Prices Plunge, Farmers: MBG Programme Yet to Launch

Farmers have revealed that the price of live chickens has begun to decline. Currently, the price of live chickens is only Rp18,000 per kilogram. Asep Saepudin, a chicken farmer affiliated with the Independent Farmers’ Union of Indonesia (Permindo), admitted that this is further pressuring the economic conditions of those in the business. According to Asep, one reason for the plunge in chicken prices is that the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) programme has not yet been implemented. During Eid, chicken prices were at Rp24,000 per kilogram. Afterwards, they experienced a decline to the current Rp18,500 per kg. “After a week of Eid al-Fitr, chicken prices have continued to fall from Rp24,000 per kg to the current Rp18,500 per kg,” he said. Although chicken prices have fallen, livestock feed prices have instead risen by Rp200 per kilogram since 1 April 2026. Asep has no choice but to dig deeper into his pockets because the increase in feed prices raises the cost of goods produced (HPP). Asep calculates his HPP at Rp22,000 and hopes the government will act to bring chicken prices back to normal. The Market and Basic Needs Monitoring System (SP2KP) is a national system that monitors developments in the prices of basic necessities across Indonesia on a daily basis. According to the official website sp2kp.kemendag.go.id, there has been no update on national chicken prices as of today, Monday (6/4/2026). The last update was on 2 April 2026, where the visible information shows the price of broiler chicken meat at Rp40,202 per kilogram.
