Jakarta, VIVA – Trade Minister Budi Santoso has confirmed that whilst there have been reports of chicken prices reaching Rp 45,000 per kilogram in several markets, the national average remains under control ahead of Ramadan.

Data from the Market and Basic Commodities Monitoring System (SP2KP) as of 13 February 2026 shows that broiler chicken is still priced at an average of Rp 40,259 per kg nationally.

“It means there are indeed some at Rp 45,000, but there are certainly also those below Rp 40,000. So it doesn’t mean the national average is Rp 45,000. But we will still check those higher prices,” said Budi at the Ministry of Trade in Jakarta on Wednesday, 18 February 2026.

According to the minister, the government will investigate markets recording high prices to determine whether the cause is distribution disruptions or surges in local demand. The government is targeting prices to remain within the range of the reference purchase price (HAP) and the maximum retail price (HET).

Based on coordination with industry players, Budi said chicken supply is sufficient with no production disruptions, including with regard to feed prices. He stated that the price increases are primarily driven by rising demand ahead of the major religious holiday.

“Typically, as Lebaran approaches, demand increases. But we are asking for anticipatory measures. Whether it’s Lebaran or the Christmas and New Year period, supply must be maintained. So when demand surges, prices must remain stable,” said Budi.

The Ministry of Trade, the National Food Agency (Bapanas), the Ministry of Agriculture, regional governments, the National Police, and the Food Task Force will continue to monitor prices both directly at markets and through the SP2KP system.

Besides chicken, the national average price for broiler eggs is recorded at Rp 30,570 per kg. The Trade Minister noted that in several regions prices are even lower, such as Rp 28,000 in Sukoharjo and Rp 29,000 per kg in Palembang.

The government is optimistic that price stability and adequate supply can be maintained throughout Ramadan, enabling the public to observe their religious duties without the burden of surging staple food prices.
