Chicken Meat and PDAM Water Tariffs Trigger Inflation in NTB for September 2026
The consumer price movement in Nusa Tenggara Barat (NTB) recorded an inflation rate of 0.36 per cent in September 2026. The price increases for chicken meat and Regional Water Utility Company (PDAM) tariffs were the primary drivers of this inflation.
“The price movement for chicken meat was caused by sustained high public demand during the Maulid Nabi celebrations through the first week of September. The increase in PDAM water tariffs occurred in Sumbawa Regency following the implementation of the Sumbawa Regent’s Decision Number 697 of 2026,” said the Head of BPS NTB, Wahyudin, following the release of inflation data at his office on Thursday (1/10/2026).
“Other commodities also contributing to inflation include the rising price of fresh shrimp, caused by reduced pond harvests due to extreme weather which triggered changes in pond water temperatures. This hindered shrimp growth and led to a decrease in harvest yields,” he added.
This extreme weather has also impacted the harvests of tomatoes and bird’s eye chillies. Consequently, the prices of chillies and tomatoes began to surge during the dry season.
BPS NTB noted that broiler chicken contributed 0.12 per cent to inflation, followed by PDAM water tariffs at 0.08 per cent, fresh shrimp at 0.07 per cent, tomatoes at 0.05 per cent, and bird’s eye chillies at 0.04 per cent.
Meanwhile, several commodities recorded deflation in September 2026. Commodities experiencing price decreases included shallots at 0.03 per cent, red chillies at 0.02 per cent, long beans at 0.02 per cent, air transport at 0.02 per cent, and gold jewellery at 0.02 per cent.
“The decrease in shallot prices was influenced by harvests entering the market, resulting in sufficient stock. Similarly, red chillies also saw price decreases as production is currently abundant. Meanwhile, the reduction in air transport tariffs was implemented by airlines to attract flight ticket purchases,” explained Wahyudin.
In terms of regional distribution, the highest inflation occurred in Sumbawa Regency at 0.69 per cent with a Consumer Price Index (CPI) of 113.23. This was followed by Mataram City at 0.18 per cent with a CPI of 113.23, and Bima City, which experienced inflation of 0.18 per cent with a CPI of 113.51.
“All CPI regions in NTB Province experienced monthly inflation. The highest monthly inflation occurred in Sumbawa Regency,” Wahyudin clarified.
Wahydin revealed that several commodities contributed to inflation within the NTB CPI regions. These commodities include broiler chicken, tomatoes, higher education costs, bird’s eye chillies, moringa leaves, PDAM water tariffs, fresh shrimp, tilapia, tuna, scad, and air transport.
