Chevron to clear tax case
LOS ANGELES (Reuter): Chevron Corp said that it had decided to hand over to the U.S. Internal Revenue Service tax documents related to its Indonesian operations in order to "clear the air" over allegations that crimes or frauds may have been committed.
"Nothing supports this nonsense about crimes and fraud," said Chevron spokesman Mike Libbey. "We had withheld the documents earlier because we felt attorney client privilege was an important principle, but that was superseded by an issue that really threatens our reputation."
Chevron said earlier on Monday that the IRS had requested documents regarding Chevron negotiations with the government of Indonesia and Pertamina, the state oil company there, in a dispute over US$1.4 billion in tax credits.
