Chess Player Suffers Head Injury During Central Java Provincial Games: Here’s What Happened
Twenty-two athletes competing in the 2026 Central Java Provincial Sports Week (Porprov) suffered injuries including fractures and bleeding. One of them was a chess player. How did it happen?
“The latest figure is 157 cases: 121 treated as outpatients at health posts, 22 requiring referral, and 14 kept under observation at health posts. The data are still dynamic, depending on reports from colleagues in the field,” said Elhamangto Zuhdan, head of the Porprov Central Java organising committee’s health section, when contacted, as reported by detikJateng on Thursday (29 October 2026).
One injured athlete was a chess player, who suffered a head laceration while using the toilet.
“Then there was one unexpected case in chess. The athlete suffered a laceration to the head after falling while using the toilet. It was not caused by chess,” he added.
Among the athletes referred for further treatment were those with injuries including a broken nose and bleeding to the face.
“Many of those referred were in cases such as those in Salatiga. There was a broken nose, followed by several cases of bleeding to the face,” he said.
Meanwhile, Central Java KONI secretary-general Budi Santoso said the organisation had evaluated the sporting event. The review was carried out with the head of the Central Java Youth and Sports Agency (Dispora), delegation representatives and sports association officials.
He said the evaluation would inform improvements to standard operating procedures (SOPs), particularly those concerning athlete safety. The number of ambulances, doctors and paramedics at competition venues would also be increased.
