Chery Pushes for Increased Production at Handal Factory
Wuhu - Chery is preparing production expansion plans in Indonesia amid rising consumer demand and the potential launch of new models in the near future. This is prompting the Chinese carmaker to increase production capacity at the PT Handal Indonesia Motor (HIM) facility. President Director of Chery Group Indonesia, Zeng Shuo, revealed that Chery’s current production capacity at the Handal factory stands at 4,000 units. “Our current production capacity at Handal is 4,000,” said Zeng in Wuhu, China, on Tuesday (28/4/2026). He stated that the company is ready to accommodate the need for increased production. However, the steps taken will not immediately involve building new facilities. According to Jongkie, the company will first optimise existing production lines to minimise investment costs while maintaining flexibility in an unstable market. “We will prepare many ways. I can’t possibly build everything new, like another factory; that would all cost money. And we must be prepared if the market turns bad, production drops—what to do with the existing facilities,” said Jongkie. As a solution, HIM is considering adding working hours through a shift system without adding new production lines. “To increase production, perhaps work two shifts. The lanes remain the same, but we add day and night shifts. This is one example,” he said. With this optimisation strategy, the increase in production capacity is expected to be carried out gradually without burdening with major investments, while anticipating a surge in demand from the presence of the new models.
