Chery Plans to Make Indonesia a Production and Export Base

WUHU, KOMPAS.com - Chery Group assesses that Indonesia has the potential to become a centre for production as well as a base for vehicle exports in the future, in line with the strengthening of local manufacturing capacity and supply chains.

President of Chery International, Zhang Guibing, stated that Indonesia is already an important part of Chery's global production network through cooperation with local partners. However, the existing capacity remains a challenge for rapid volume increases.

'We think Indonesia should become a production centre with the various advantages it has, such as production costs,' he said during an interview session at the Chery International Business Summit 2026 in Wuhu, China, on Tuesday (28/4/2026).

Currently, Chery Group relies on the facilities of PT Handal Indonesia Motor (HIM) in Pondok Ungu, Bekasi, West Java, to assemble various vehicle models, including the J6. The production capacity at that facility is around 4,000 units per year.

In addition, Chery also utilises Inchcape's facilities in Wanaherang, Bogor, West Java, with a capacity of around 1,000 units per year. Both facilities are used to maintain production flexibility amid capacity limitations.

Zhang emphasised that increasing capacity will be an important factor in driving the future export plans from Indonesia.

'If the capacity increases, we will move to exports. I think this is our main intention,' he said.

Moreover, Chery claims to have involved several local suppliers to support production activities, while also opening opportunities for more suppliers from China to invest in Indonesia.

For product development, Chery continues to apply a gradual strategy by introducing various brands according to different market needs.

'For new models, we will introduce them step by step. We will also try various brands to meet different customer demands,' said Zhang.
