Chemical Plant Explodes in Cilegon as Pungent Odour Spreads Through Streets
Chemical plant PT Merak Chemical Indonesia (PT MCCI), previously known as PT Mitsubishi Chemical Indonesia in Cilegon, Banten, exploded on Monday afternoon (25 May), releasing thick white smoke and a pungent chemical odour. The facility, which produces Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA), a crucial raw material for the textile and polyester industries, reportedly exploded at approximately 14:30 WIB. “It seemed to have been an overpressure issue, leading to the explosion,” said Pulomerak Police Chief Kompol DP Ambarita via his mobile phone on Monday (25 May). Thick white smoke engulfed the plant area, spreading to nearby roads and residential areas. Strong chemical odours were also detected around the plant, prompting Pulomerak Police Chief DP Ambarita to wear a double-layer mask to minimise chemical exposure risks. “Due to the strong chemical smell, I dared not approach the site, hence I wore two masks there,” he added. Police have ordered the chemical company, MCCI, to distribute masks to residents and workers. Residents and workers have also been evacuated from the vicinity of the plant to minimise the effects of chemical exposure. “The company has been advised to distribute masks as an initial measure, and residents have been urged to stay away via official channels,” he explained. As of publication, the company had not provided any explanation or statement.
