The National Medical Centre Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo (RSCM) has provided intensive medical treatment to Andrie Yunus, 27, deputy coordinator at Kontras. Andrie sustained chemical burns from exposure to caustic liquid on his face and several parts of his body.

According to Yoga Nara, Manager of Law and Public Relations at RSCM, the patient arrived at the Emergency Department (ED) of RSCM on Friday, 13 March at approximately midnight.

“With complaints of chemical burns on the face, neck, chest, back, and both arms, accompanied by vision impairment in the right eye,” said Yoga in a statement in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Upon arrival at the ED, the medical team immediately conducted initial examination and stabilisation procedures. “Examination using pH indicators showed exposure to acidic chemical substances in the burned area,” said Yoga.

As initial treatment, the medical team performed irrigation or washing of the exposed area to reduce the effects of the chemical and normalise tissue condition.

Yoga stated that upon admission to the ED, the initial diagnosis showed approximately 24 percent burns resulting from inflammatory reaction from the caustic liquid that contacted the skin.

“The burns were particularly present on the face area, especially on the right side, including the right eye, both hands, and the chest area,” said Yoga.
