Cheeky fugitive upsets police

JAKARTA: Irked by media reports that a fugitive made an appearance during the inauguration of Cabinet ministers at the State Palace on Oct. 21, National Police chief Gen. Da'i Bachtiar ordered his officers on Friday to intensify the hunt for the man.

Jakarta Police chief Insp. Gen. Firman Gani was quick to respond to the order, saying Dodi Sumadi, who is accused of embezzling Rp 15 billion (US$9 million) from Hutomo "Tommy" Mandala Putra, the son of former president Soeharto, would be captured within 100 days.

Da'i said he doubted the accuracy of media reports placing Dodi at the tightly guarded event on Oct. 21.

Dodi allegedly received money from Tommy in October 2000 to help secure clemency from then president Abdurrahman Wahid. Tommy reported Dodi to the police after his request for clemency was rejected.
