Waskita Karya is playing an active role as a catalyst in providing educational facilities through the People’s School construction project. This step is part of the state-owned construction company’s commitment to supporting access to education, particularly for poor and extremely poor families.

“Insha’Allah it will be completed on time. Thus, by next July, the permanent building of the People’s School can already be used,” said Gus Ipul in his statement on Wednesday (6/5/2026).

He explained that the Surabaya People’s School (SR) is targeted to accommodate up to 1,000 students from primary school (SD), junior high school (SMP), to senior high school (SMA) levels. To support teaching and learning activities, supporting facilities such as a library, dormitory, laboratory, School Health Unit (UKS), and extracurricular activities are also being prepared.

“We hope this will truly become a place for learning and teaching in a quality environment,” he hoped.

Gus Ipul emphasised that the SR is intended for underprivileged families, especially out-of-school children, dropouts, or those at risk of dropping out, so the recruitment pattern differs from regular schools.

Waskita Karya’s Corporate Secretary, Ermy Puspa Yunita, added that the realisation of the Surabaya SR construction has now reached 58.13 percent. The company is committed to accelerating the project located in Kedung Cowek Village.

“In line with government directives, Waskita continues to work on the SR building in Surabaya to complete it on time and make it usable soon. The on-site team is working day and night in shifts to realise one of the government’s priority programmes,” Ermy explained.

The company, Ermy continued, is also pursuing the construction of all SRs in East Java. For information, besides in Surabaya, the company has also been entrusted with constructing SRs in Gresik Regency, Jombang, Sampang, and Tuban.

She revealed that nearly 4,000 workers on site are focused on completing all these projects. Some of them are local workers.

“In the future, we will continue to open more job opportunities and absorb more local labour to complete the projects. This way, it not only brings broad benefits to education, social, and economic aspects, but also mobilises the informal sector and MSMEs (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises), ultimately driving community welfare,” she said.

For Waskita, Ermy stated, working on the SR building is not just about completing a task; it is an effort to build the nation’s future. This project is part of the company’s contribution to supporting equitable access to decent and quality education, while also eradicating poverty.

“The entire Waskita Karya management is committed to continuing to support government programmes through project execution for ministries and institutions to drive a better future for Indonesia,” she explained.

As is known, the company has over 65 years of experience in building infrastructure.

Currently, Waskita Karya is handling several projects, including the Jakarta LRT Phase 1B to support smooth transportation, the Bener Dam in Central Java, the Pulau Laut Bridge in South Kalimantan, the Probolinggo-Situbondo-Banyuwangi Toll Road, and the Cendrawasih Dobo Regional General Hospital (RSUD) in Maluku, which is part of the Best Results Quick Programme (PHTC).

Overall, the company has been entrusted with constructing SRs in four provinces, including SR South Sulawesi 1 built in Wajo Regency, Barru, Sopeng, Sidrap, and Tana Toraja.

There is also SR East Java 1 in Gresik Regency, Sampang, Tuban, Jombang, and Surabaya City. Next is SR South Sumatra 1 in Ogan Ilir Regency, Ogan Komering Ilir, and Empat Lawang. Then SR Aceh 2 in Subulussalam City and Nagan Raya.
