Cheap Market at Monas Could Become a Regular Agenda
The government is not ruling out the possibility of turning the cheap market activity for Jakarta residents held in the National Monument area into a regular agenda.
Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya said that the event, filled with a bazaar, raffle prizes, and public entertainment in commemoration of Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijriah, was held for the first time. “Certainly, the President wants the best, so it will definitely be routine,” said Teddy at the Monas area in Jakarta on Saturday night, 28 March 2026.
Not only that, the government is also opening the possibility of holding similar activities in other regions. Teddy said the central government has urged regional heads to organise events with a similar concept.
“But the timing is up to each regional head. The main point is that as many people as possible feel the joy of Eid,” said Teddy.
On the same occasion, the Minister for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises Maman Abdurrahman said that besides celebrating Eid, the cheap market activity aims to encourage economic movement, especially in the MSME sector.
Maman claimed the event involved around a thousand food and beverage street business operators. Then, operators of ready-to-wear clothing, shoes, and bags from various markets in Jakarta—such as Tanah Abang Market to Senen Market—were also involved. Maman stated that the government prepared around 100,000 product packages to be distributed to residents.
With this activity, he claimed, business operators can clear old stock while starting new production.
“So this is also the impact hoped for by the President to move the economy in this post-Eid moment,” he said.
Nevertheless, Teddy and Maman did not clearly answer regarding the budget for the cheap market event in the Silang Monumen Nasional area. Maman was initially asked whether the funding source for the event came from the MSME Ministry’s budget allocation. “No, no. This budget allocation is in… in… in…” said Maman while gesturing towards Teddy.
However, before Maman finished speaking, Teddy interjected. “The point is, it’s there, okay,” said Teddy.
President Prabowo Subianto previously ordered his subordinates to hold a cheap market activity for Jakarta residents. The event took place from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. WIB on Saturday, 28 March 2026. Teddy said the cheap market activity was intended for the capital’s residents, both those who did not go home for Eid and those who have returned to Jakarta after the Eid holiday.
Furthermore, Teddy recounted that Prabowo’s order to hold this activity stemmed from the public’s enthusiasm during Eid last week at the Presidential Palace. “The President wants as many people as possible to share Eid joy in a warm atmosphere full of togetherness,” said Teddy via the Instagram account @sekretariat.kabinet on Saturday afternoon.
