Cheap Food Movement in Cianjur Held Ahead of Eid al-Adha
Cheap Food Movement (GPM) was held at the grounds of the Office of Food Crops, Horticulture and Plantations (DTPHP) in Cianjur Regency, West Java, on Wednesday, 20 May, integrated with an agrishow and held ahead of Eid al-Adha 1447 Hijri. Ali, Secretary of the Office of Food Crops, Horticulture and Plantations of Cianjur, said the event was held to help residents obtain staple foods at lower prices ahead of Eid al-Adha. There were two agenda items: the Cheap Food Movement and Agrishow. ‘The core of this activity is to make it easier for the community to obtain staple ingredients ahead of Eid al-Adha at prices below market,’ Ali said. Various food products sold at the event were subsidised, so the prices offered were lower than those in the market. ‘For example, chicken eggs, in the market they are typically sold at around Rp29,000 per kilogram. At this event they are sold at Rp26,000 per kilogram,’ Ali said. According to Ali, such a pattern helps even though not by a large amount. It is hoped it can ease the burden on the public ahead of Eid al-Adha. The event involved around 20 partners, including Bulog and several other agencies that participated in providing staple foods for the public. ‘There are 20 partners involved here,’ he added. GPM is usually held ahead of major religious and national days, such as Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, as well as Christmas and New Year. At these moments, demand for staple foods tends to rise. ‘Generally, from the experience we have gained, GPM is very helpful to the community because the prices offered are cheaper than the market,’ he concluded.
