Indonesia is recorded as one of the countries with the highest usage of ChatGPT for education in the world. This fact was conveyed by Head of Education Asia Pacific OpenAI, Raghav Gupta, during a media gathering in Jakarta on Wednesday (8/4/2026).

According to Gupta, the activity of using ChatGPT for learning in Indonesia is particularly prominent compared to many other countries.

The measure is evident from the number of education-themed messages sent by users. He stated that Indonesia is in the world’s top five for per capita usage of ChatGPT related to learning.

These figures indicate that AI is now increasingly used as a learning companion, whether for seeking explanations of material, discussing, or helping to understand specific topics.

He added that the majority of ChatGPT users in Indonesia come from the young age group. Around 70 percent of users are in the 18 to 34-year-old range. This group includes students, undergraduates, postgraduates, and young professionals.

The dominance of the young age group shows that AI technology is increasingly familiar to the generation that is actively learning and working.

Globally, ChatGPT usage has continued to grow since it was first introduced in November 2022. Currently, the number of weekly active ChatGPT users has exceeded 900 million people.

Gupta mentioned that learning activities are one of the main reasons people use ChatGPT in various countries.

With such a large scale of usage, ChatGPT is now beginning to be seen as one of the largest learning platforms in the world.

Nevertheless, Gupta emphasised that the utilisation of AI in the world of education must still be done wisely. Several studies show that AI can help improve learning outcomes if used appropriately.

However, if used merely as a shortcut to complete assignments, AI can actually lower the quality of the thinking and learning process. Therefore, educational institutions are considered to need to encourage responsible AI usage.

In addition, increasing AI literacy among students, university students, and educators is also an important matter.
