OpenAI has added a new feature to ChatGPT called Virtual Try On, which enables users to see a visual representation of themselves wearing specific clothing virtually simply by uploading a photo.

This feature allows users to create simulation images of themselves wearing the garments displayed within the ChatGPT conversation. According to Engadget, a similar concept was previously implemented by Google in their search feature, allowing users to upload photos to see themselves in various types of clothing.

The feature is not limited to products recommended by ChatGPT; users can also upload screenshots or images of clothing found on other websites or platforms. OpenAI stated that this capability utilises the ChatGPT Images 2.5 model, released in September 2026, to generate the virtual try-on images.

In addition to the virtual clothing try-on feature, OpenAI now allows users to save products they like into a library within the application. This ensures that previously discovered products can be revisited when users wish to view them or consider a purchase at a later date.

However, users must remain mindful of privacy settings when uploading images to ChatGPT. Images uploaded from personal accounts are automatically used to train AI models unless the user opts out.

Shopping features are one of the key areas OpenAI continues to develop within ChatGPT. The company previously introduced ‘Instant Checkout’, which allowed users to complete transactions through ChatGPT, although this feature has since been discontinued. OpenAI also provides advertisements within conversations that can be used to promote products and services.

While ChatGPT does not yet operate as an e-commerce platform on the scale of Amazon, the addition of various shopping features demonstrates OpenAI’s efforts to expand the chatbot’s function from merely answering questions to becoming a tool that helps users discover products they wish to purchase.
