ChatGPT Boss Warns Superintelligent AI Could Become a Disaster
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has issued a stern warning to US policymakers. He is urging the US government to take concrete steps promptly to welcome the era of advanced artificial intelligence (AI), often referred to as superintelligence. This ChatGPT boss emphasises that AI technology is no longer merely a theoretical domain or laboratory experiment. AI has rapidly become a primary driver of the everyday economy. Therefore, the US must prepare to face both sides of this revolution’s coin: extraordinary potential benefits, as well as lurking disaster risks. Altman outlines the positive aspects of superintelligence. Such superintelligent AI systems are already capable of taking over programming (coding) and research tasks that previously required a full team. In the future, the next generation of AI models will bring even greater leaps. “AI will help scientists make major discoveries and enable an individual to accomplish work typically done by large-scale groups,” Altman explained, as quoted by KompasTekno from the Axios YouTube channel. According to him, employment dynamics are already shifting. A programmer in 2026 works in a far different manner than in previous years. Ultimately, AI will transform into a kind of utility or basic necessity akin to electricity supply. “You will have a super personal assistant running in the cloud,” Altman stated. AI subscription systems will also be flexible. The more frequently or intelligently the level of AI you use, the higher the monthly bill, and vice versa. He emphasises how crucial it is for the US to succeed first in building this technology before being outpaced by rival countries. Nevertheless, Altman strongly rejects the idea of nationalisation (full government takeover of AI projects). “The strongest argument against nationalisation is that it is likely to fail if run as a government project, and that would be a sad thing,” he asserted.
