Charlie Chaplin Statue Cancelled Near Denpasar Heritage Area
Plans to install a statue of Charlie Chaplin, the legendary British comedian, in the heritage area of Denpasar City have been scrapped. The statue was originally planned to be placed in front of the Inna Bali Heritage Hotel on Jalan Veteran, Denpasar, or to the north of the Catur Muka Statue, also known as Denpasar City’s Zero Point.
The plan to install the Charlie Chaplin statue had been discussed by members of the Denpasar Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) and other parties. Despite the historical connection to Denpasar City, the plan was reconsidered by the government, the Denpasar DPRD, and the wider community. One of the considerations was the issue of copyright if the statue were to be installed.
Acting Head of the Denpasar Public Works and Spatial Planning Agency (PUPR), I Gede Cipta Sudewa Atmaja, confirmed to detikBali on Wednesday morning (19/8/2026) that the installation of the statue of the comedian Charlie Chaplin had been cancelled.
“It has been cancelled. Following the development of opinions in the media,” said Cipta Sudewa.
According to Cipta Sudewa, the installation of the Charlie Chaplin statue was also not on heritage area land, but rather on private land belonging to the hotel that the legendary comedian had once visited. Charlie Chaplin is known as a silent comedian who packaged his comedy with tickling movements and became famous around 1914.
“So we evaluated it again. It would be better if the hotel itself organised it if there is such a desire, for example,” he added.
Previously, Denpasar Mayor I Gusti Ngurah Jaya Negara, when met at the Denpasar DPRD some time ago, also responded to the plan to install the Charlie Chaplin statue.
There were considerations that needed to be made after input emerged from legislative members. “We very much agree with the council. If possible, we hope that the hotel will build and arrange it, not us from the city government because we are worried there could be an error in authority,” said Jaya Negara on Tuesday (28/7/2026).
The Denpasar city government and the Denpasar DPRD also still have concerns regarding royalties if the Charlie Chaplin statue were to be installed.
“This started from an idea and proposal, however the location there holds historical value where the hotel has a historical icon,” he continued.
Meanwhile, Denpasar DPRD member from the Gerindra faction, I Gede Tommy Sumertha, expressed a similar view. According to him, the Charlie Chaplin statue could indeed be an attraction for tourists visiting Denpasar City.
“Yes, that is why it must be deepened further regarding the person concerned, whether there are royalties? So that later when it is made there are no claims or counterclaims. This needs to be examined from the legal and regulatory aspects,” said Gede Tommy at the DPRD building on Tuesday (28/7/2026).
