BANDUNG: A series of events themed Charity for Micko Protonema has been staged by artists, musicians and community members in Bandung since June 2005.

Matdon, one of the organizing committee of these events, said that to raise funds for Micko, a singer of Protonema, one of Bandung's musical bands, various charity concerts have been held together with the sales of art goods, musical instruments and other merchandise items.

"Micko fainted and went into a coma in a hospital because of a heart attack and a blood vessel disorder. The doctor recommended heart surgery, which would have be very expensive. That's why we are organizing these events specially for him," Matdon said.

Micko is a Bandung musician and singer who has been successful in Indonesia's musical arena. He is one of the founders of Java Jive, a band set up in 1988. Later Micko, born Wydiatmoko Nugroho, set up his own band, Protonema.

The charity concert for Micko, held on June 19, 2003, saw the participation of a great number of noted singers and famous musical groups from Bandung, such as Peterpan, /Rif and Rida (RSD). Well-known musician Sawung Jabo also had his acoustic guitar auctioned at Fame Station, Jl. Sersan Bajuri.

The organizing committee of these events has raised over Rp 84 million and the money has been spent on Micko's heart surgery. The committee is now raising more money by selling CDs of songs composed by Micko and T-shirts to cover the expenses for Micko's recovery. --JP
