Chaos as President Seeks Third Term, Citizens Launch Massive Protests

Demonstrations opposing planned constitutional amendments that would pave the way for the President to run for a third term have occurred in Congo. The protests against the proposed constitutional changes in the Democratic Republic of Congo took place on Wednesday (16/09/2026). Citizens are outraged because the plan would allow President Felix Tshisekedi to run for a third term.

Protests were organised in the capital, Kinshasa, and several other major cities. Police utilised tear gas to disperse the crowds. Reuters news agency also reported on the incident, noting that police reportedly fired warning shots in Kinshasa.

The action was organised following a call from the Coalition Article 64 (C64) group, an opposition alliance opposing the constitutional changes that could extend Tshisekedi’s tenure.

In Kinshasa, hundreds of demonstrators took to the streets carrying flags from various political parties. According to Reuters witnesses, the demonstrations were initially peaceful before clashes broke out between opposition supporters and pro-government groups.

In Mbandaka, the capital of Equateur Province in northwest Congo, activists reported that approximately 10 people were arrested, while around 100 activists were dispersed by security forces.
